Job Description

Performs and participates in decontamination, cleaning, inspecting, assembling, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment. Performs these duties in accordance with Kearney Regional Medical Center policy and procedure manual. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

  • Follows the standards of operation of the department and work in compliance with the standards set by regulatory agencies.
  • Performs duties independently, works proficiently without supervision, and helps train new employees.
  • Identifies and uses appropriate methods and solutions to sort, disassemble, decontaminate, rinse, and disinfect instruments and clinical equipment.
  • Operates and troubleshoots cleaning equipment.
  • Appropriately handles garbage, linen, and biohazardous material. Maintains safety standards. Universal Precautions are followed through wearing the appropriate PPE.
  • Correctly assembles, protects, wrap, containerize, peel pouch, and label instruments.
  • Identifies and inspects instruments for cleanliness and functionality.
  • Properly handles and stores sterile supplies, equipment, and instruments.
  • Selects appropriate sterilization methods. Knows and follows correct Principles of sterilization.
  • Ensures sterilizers are maintained, drains checked daily, and machines cleaned weekly.
  • Properly documents and verifies sterilization loads and biological tests to determine the efficacy of the sterilization process. Follows standards on biological and chemical indicators.
  • Helps with keeping supplies in stock and letting the appropriate personnel know in a timely manner.
  • Maintains a clean orderly work area. Completes assigned housekeeping duties.

Education/Regulatory Requirements

  • Certification in Sterile Processing preferred but not required.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Displays high multitasking skills.
  • Displays organizational skills.
  • Displays high attention to detail.
