Job Description

Nurse Residents will be hired in respective units prior to beginning the program.

The program will begin in June, and provide additional education along with routine orientation.

Will perform delegated tasks, under the direct supervision of the RN Preceptor and RN nurse educators. Promotes continuity of care by communicating with interdisciplinary team and family as appropriate. Able to work with the age specific populations according to the setting. The resident is not permitted to function independently for the primary duties listed below and is considered a technician under the supervision of the Registered Nurse preceptor.

  • Perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy. This includes pediatric, geriatric and the general patient population.
  • Assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques.
  • Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient's age.
  • Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.
  • Follows the five (5) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors. Medication administration will be witnessed by licensed nursing preceptor.
  • Assist physicians with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills.
  • Provide patient treatments and services witnessed by licensed nursing preceptor.
  • Attends all weekly education and in the first initial 6 weeks, and then attends monthly education for the first year after the nurse residency program.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Interacts professionally with patient/family.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patient population served.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to Nurse Manager, co-workers and physicians.
  • Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • May administer narcotics, but only under the designated preceptor.
  • Unable to administer blood transfusions, as this must be under the supervision of a preceptor.

Education/Experience

  • Graduate of Accredited Nursing School
  • Current BLS certification.
